Important - if your ICOM port breaks, it really is best not to try repairing it yourself. We've seen ports glued down and have even found silicon RTV sealant holding network ports in place! Please don't do it.
Any kind of adhesive on the circuit board is bad news - for a number of reasons:
- Uncured adhesives may be conductive and short out other components.
- Adhesives don't fix the fractured pins between board and port. Fractured pins could see your port appearing to operate correctly, when in fact it operates at lower speeds and drops data packets - leading to instability.
- Adhesives put more strain on the board and when the port "rips" away it can delaminate or fracture the circuit board. At least solder joints failing tend not to damage the board and allow for future repair. At this point, more complex board repairs are required, where possible, and this carries additional costs on a time taken basis.
We also see poorly performed repairs where too much heat has been applied to the board causing blistering and even ports which have not been located correctly before soldering and not sitting flush with the board.
