How the Ethernet port gets damaged
The RJ45 network port on the ACTIA ICOM Next is the hardest-working connector on the unit. In daily workshop use it is plugged and unplugged constantly, often at awkward angles under a dashboard or in the boot. Over time we see the same failure patterns come through the door:
- Cables being yanked sideways while latched, levering the socket off its solder pads.
- The retaining latch snapping, so the plug sits loose and the connection drops intermittently.
- Bent or pushed-back contact pins inside the socket from forced insertions.
- Cracked solder joints from repeated stress, often invisible until the unit is on the bench.
- Damage to the board around the port when a cable has taken a hard knock while connected.

Symptoms to look for
- ISTA or your diagnostic software cannot see the ICOM over Ethernet, but the unit powers on.
- The connection works only when the cable is held at a certain angle.
- The link drops mid-session, especially when the cable is touched or the car is moved.
- The network LED on the unit stays dark or flickers with a known-good cable.
- The plug no longer clicks and latches into the socket.
Before assuming the port is dead, rule out the cable and the network configuration — a surprising number of "broken" ICOMs turn out to have a faulty patch lead. If a known-good cable and a direct connection still fail, the port itself is the likely culprit.
Repair or replace?
A replacement ICOM Next is a significant expense, and in most port-failure cases it is unnecessary. The rest of the unit — the processor, memory and interfaces — is usually perfectly healthy; it is the connector and its joints that have worn out. Replacing the port restores full function at a fraction of the cost of a new unit, and keeps a repairable device in service rather than in landfill.
Repair makes less sense when the unit has suffered severe board damage — for example cracked PCB layers around the socket — or when it has other faults beyond the port. Where damage goes deeper than the connector, we assess the board and tell you honestly whether a board-level repair is worthwhile before you commit.

- Inspection of the port and surrounding board under magnification.
- Removal of the damaged socket and replacement with a new port.
- Board-level repair where pads or tracks have been lifted or damaged.
- Connection and communication testing before the unit leaves the bench.
